Bullying, in its many forms, is not specific to this part of the life span. Regardless of the age of the child, it is important to stop to focus on it and discuss the ramifications of this behavior, both on the victim and the bully. As you discuss this topic, please keep in mind, issues like child culture; the home environment; and how our schools are set up to handle this issue.

  • Discuss the short term and long-term impact that bullying has on victims. Describe the aspects of a victim that makes them potentially vulnerable to bullies. What can schools do to be proactive in recognizing those students who are at risk for being bullied and what can schools do to intervene on the child's behalf?
  • What about the bullies themselves? Discuss the short term and long-term impact of being a bully, on the bully's life? Also, address what it is that may influence this type of behavior in a child. Think about contextual influences that make a child vulnerable to becoming a bully.
  • Thinking about child culture and the rules of morality, why are bullies successful at being bullies? What is it about child culture that may be protecting the bully and impeding accountability? Explain your answer.
