Assignment:
This question speaks about ID which is something we go into within the assignment for the week. I am not sure if everyone has watched "Making a Murderer" which is on Netflix (you will binge watch if you start so this is a warning up front). Since I lived about an hour from Manitowoc, and I remember Avery initially being charged for rape, his release and his second charge and then conviction it seems like a good topic for this discussion. The movie is about the Steven Avery trial regarding the murder of Teresa Halbach. One thing that was brought out in the movie was the IQ of Avery which was in the 70's. In the movie they also showed the police getting a confession out of Brandon Dassey who has an IQ of under 70. The video shows that Dassey clearly didn't understand what was happening. Thoughts? Steven also has a similar IQ, but we tend to not give as much sympathy as he is more verbally able and that masks his actual IQ.
You may also want to search "the happiest inmate on death row" named Joe Arridy.
What protections do people with low IQ's have regarding legal issues? Signing documents, or like this criminal matters? What about driving a car or owning a gun?
