Assignment:

As we have seen in this week's lecture and readings, some of the implications of biological and psychological theories can be quite controversial in nature. What do you see as potential ethical or practical repercussions? Consider some of the following examples: Do you believe it is ethical to sterilize or offer incentives for the sterilization of female drug offenders? What about castration for sex offenders? What about psychological testing to determine risk for offending or recidivism for criminal justice processing decisions?

Are there or under what circumstance would it be appropriate to use biological factors (e.g. testosterone levels, resting heart rate, genetic markers, brain scan profiles) to predict whether people will commit criminal acts in the future and use that information in treatment programs and/or criminal justice processing decisions? What other practical/ethical implications can you think of? What kinds of practical implications do these theories point to would not raise many ethical questions?

In your follow-up post, help build upon or refine an example from another student you think is particularly worthwhile. How would you further develop that proposal? How might you overcome some challenges of implementing the proposal successfully?
