Question I: The end of the war in Vietnam occurred nearly fifty years ago. It was the first conflict that it can be said that the United States lost. From the text of the war written by Herring and the extensive lectures on the topic, how was it possible for the United States to have indeed lost the only war in its history? There is no question that overwhelming US firepower and mobility could in no way have been matched by the combined efforts of the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese. The amazing part was of course, that for the most part US and Soviet forces never clashed and the human race was spared nuclear annihilation. Having won the Cold War, there had to be a number of events that brought the Soviet Union to its downfall. Was George Kennan right all along. or were the guiding principles of NSC-68 the main culprits in bringing down the Soviet empire? Think about the confluence of events and determine which of them ultimately led to the demise of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).
