The reaction NaIO3 (soln) + NaOCl (soln) → NaIO4 (s) + NaCl (soln) illustrates the ability to use solubility to dictate the desired outcome. NaIO4 can be used in organic reactions to separate adjacent diols into two different aldehydes (shown below).
