For the discussion for Module 1 consider/read the following:
Targeted marketing segments potential customers discovers their preferred content delivery mode and then builds a marketing strategy aimed at that specific group. In essence, targeted marketing can be thought of as the process of identifying customers and promoting products/services in ways and in places that are likely to reach those potential customers. It tends to be more effective than broader types of marketing because it is designed around specific customer preferences. There are both critics and proponents of the use of targeted marketing strategies. For example, community leaders in largely minority neighborhoods have staged protests against billboards promoting beer or cigarettes in these areas. However, the Association of National Advertisers disagrees with this perspective. What are your views regarding this issue?
Then
Take a position (this means choose a side and defend/support it): (1) The practice of targeted marketing is discriminatory, unfair and unethical, especially if such a strategy encourages a group of people to buy a product that may be injurious to them or that they cannot afford. OR (2) The use of targeted marketing is an acceptable, commonly used and legal marketing practice that simply makes groups of consumers aware of products/services that are available to them. Banning targeted marketing constitutes censorship and thus is a violation of the First Amendment.
