Lewis theory predicts that carbon can have no more than four bonds because that will give it a full octet. However, compounds such as Ru6C(CO)15 are known in which a carbon atom sits inside of a cage of transition metal atoms and has six bonds. The picture below shows the basic structure for this compound (the CO pieces are left off for simplicity). Use valence bond theory to explain how it is possible for carbon to have 6 bonds in this compound.
