These are now the vital tools of fan response and voice for sports marketers.

OVERVIEW

This case is an exercise in social media communities and their ability to come together for effective business dialogue among students, academia, and practitioners. A university academic in sports marketing, the plan had been to launch a new program of studies in sports marketing management, and to promote this social media was the preferred vehicle of choice.

BACKGROUND

The conference was set up as a launch of the new BA undergraduate course in sports marketing at the University of Northampton. The intention was to use the conference to raise awareness of the new degree to enhance the credibility of the university in the sports business market, and to bring together the communities of sport in students, academia, and practitioners. The initial and subsequent conference used various marketing mix processes and for the first time, social media was integral to this. The agendas and assembled speakers plus the invited delegates reflected the above approach.

The conference theme was sponsorship and crowdfunding with special emphasis on new media and powers of connection through social media platforms in communications. The new opportunities to debate and discuss topics that may not necessarily be on the main agenda was an important feature in the choice of the theme. the emergent importance and involvement of audiences in crowdfunding as a new addition to sponsorship options provided the book for delegates and speakers to be attracted to the conference and join the sports community around the conference subject.
