Scenario A: In 2014, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against a large car-manufacturing firm over faulty ignition switches linked to 124 deaths. In this incident, it was reported that managerial executives knew about the faulty part for over a decade but did not fix it.
Scenario B: In 2015, it was discovered that a German car-manufacturing firm violated a Clean Air Act by installing software in over 11 million cars designed to cheat on emission tests. The company quickly came under heavy criticisms by the general public because, as perceived, organizational members knowingly evaded environmental regulations and defrauded customers (see Carberry, Engelen, & Van Essen, 2018).
