Assessment description
This SPSS data set gives a variety of variables by US state at two time points 10 years apart. Please
(i) present summary statistics for the variables given below, and (ii) analyse the data set to address the following objectives of the study:
1. Do states in the south have a higher crime rate?
2. Is there a relationship between crime rate and police expenditure?
3. Have crime rates increased in 10 years?
4. Is youth unemployment higher in the south?
SECTION A
Report the findings of each test and present the data that addresses the objectives of each question (above). Tables, figures and charts do not form part of the word count. You should interpret the findings (e.g. for statistical significance)
SECTION B
This should demonstrate your theoretical and practical understanding about the analytical processes and statistical techniques drawing on examples from your analysis in section A to illustrate your points. You should demonstrate understanding of the following concepts and processes (700 words). I suggest the use of sub-headings. You will also produce a Harvard reference list to support this section.
• Understanding of probability and statistical significance
• How to choose statistical tests and theory about the tests
• Assumptions underlying parametric and non-parametric tests
• Levels of measurement
1b. Quantitative analysis (1200 words)
You will be given a data set to analyse for this piece of work that you will download from MyBeckett.
You are required to write TWO sections. Failure to address the assignment in its entirety often leads to failure of the task.
Section A
Write up the findings and present data that addresses the objectives of the research study. You should present data in the style of a results section in a journal article (500 words). Tables and Figures form part of the word count and should be included within the text. You should explain what the results mean in terms of statistical significance and with reference to the research questions given in the assignment brief, but you should NOT discuss the findings in the context of the wider research literature.
Section B
This should demonstrate your theoretical and practical understanding about the analytical processes and statistical techniques drawing on your analysis in section A to illustrate your points. You should discuss including the following issues (700 words).
» Importance of levels of measurement in statistical theory
» Understanding of probability and statistical significance
» How to choose statistical tests and theory about the tests
» Understanding of the assumptions of parametric tests
» You will also produce a Harvard reference list to support this section
