Question

The American Hospital Association's Board of Trustees formed the Task Force on Ensuring Access in Vulnerable Communities during the span of a 15-month period. During this time, the Task Force heard from policy makers, held meetings and conducted field hearings to speak with community and hospital leaders. The Task Force consists of 29 health and hospital system leaders and state hospital association chief executive officers. The report they concluded out of these collected findings, outlines nine strategies that can help vulnerable communities to access healthcare services. This work is ongoing and have multiple strategies available to work for various populations and situations. These nine strategies consist of; addressing the social determinants of health to identify any unmet needs and how to resolve, adopting global budgets to improve financial gain for the hospital as well as quality care for the patients, increasing primary and outpatient services and utilizing emergency and urgent care centers to decrease hospital admissions, incorporating virtual care access to reduce cost and increase convenience for patients, introducing "frontier health systems" to incorporate local organizational help with that of health facilities, balancing care between rural health hospitals and clinics and developing partnerships with Indian Health Services to improve quality.
