Trends Affecting Work in the 21st Century -Final Paper
Two main objectives of this courseare (1) to understand the ways that historical trends and social and situational factors affect processes of concern to industrial and organizational psychologists and (2) integrate information from across the units.Throughout this course, we have considered how broader social, technological, and economic changes in the late 20th and early 21st century have impacted the psychology of workers and the experience of workplaces. To demonstrate your mastery over course information and your ability to draw critical connections across themes of this course, you will write a final paper in which you will discusswork issues that reflectthe shifting nature of workand their consequences for workers and workplaces.
In your paper, write about 3 of the following issues/aspects related to social, economic, and structural trends in work. This list is not meant to be exhaustive: presents topics that we have explicitly addressed in class:
- Economic inequality
- Gender and race inequality
- Automation and technological change
- Digital workplaces, virtual and remote work
- Unemployment
- The knowledge economy
- Contingent labor and the gig economy
- Overworking, just-in-time scheduling, and irregular schedules
In your discussion of the 3contemporary issues affecting work, you should define each term in your own words, describe what we know about how each aspect impacts work, and explore the psychological and social consequences of each aspect for workers andworkplaces (organization and/or work design). Then, critically connect the three aspectsto research examples, concepts, and/or the two optional course readings (Fouad & Brynner, 2008 and Salas, Kozlowski, & Chen, 2017).
Lastly, generate your own research question related to one of the work aspects that you discussed. Your question must be specific, must pertain to industrial or organizational psychology, and cannot repeat information or research that we already discussed in class. Thendescribe a hypothetical psychological research study that can provide data to answer your question.
This paper should be written in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1'' margins. The target length of the paper is 4-6 pages. Be very careful with paraphrasing and checking your final Turnitin report: papers that have over 20% overlap on Turnitin will be automatically reviewed for potential plagiarism and academic dishonesty, which will result in a 0 grade for this assignment and a charge of academic dishonesty to the Office of the Provost.
