To continue our discussion on recruitment strategy, I would like each of you to assume the role of recruiter as you take a deep dive into the use of LinkedIn as a source of qualified job candidates. As many of you know, LinkedIn is a professional networking site with a job search feature for those actively searching for jobs. Additionally, recruiters will ‘mine’ for passive candidates by conducting extensive searches to identify potential candidates based on criteria such as their geographic location, education, and critical keywords in profiles. Consider a job that you would like to have in the near future, and the qualifications that are needed for that job (that you have discovered through researching the job or speaking with professionals in that job). Next, perform a small-scale data mining effort by searching for 4-6 individuals by job title on LinkedIn who are currently working in that job, and conduct an analysis by considering the following questions: Do they have profile ‘headlines’, and if so, how do they capture the essence of their current professional roles? What relevant, job-related keywords can you identify in their profiles? Are they closely aligned with the keywords you believe represent the job based on your prior research/knowledge? Are there any indications of any of these individuals being under or overqualified for this job? What profile ‘red flags’ should a recruiter consider when deciding whether or not to reach out to an individual on LinkedIn with a job opportunity?
