Anna is at her home and thinks of a type of chair that automatically adjusts its temperature to the body heat of whoever is sitting in it. She also thinks of how she might write an instruction manual for it and what she might put into a new smartphone app that customers can download. She imagines that she will be rich, with a new business name, a distinctive way that she can sell her idea, what TV commercials might look like, how the people in the commercials will dance around and show off her product, what kinds of songs they might sing, and whether she should even come up with a mascot, like those for McDonalds or Jack in the Box, to represent here ideas. Suddenly, the Masked Intruder [“Intruder”] who had been secretly walking around in Anna’s yard, using her gardening tools and gloves without her permission, breaks down Anna’s door and surprises Anna. Intruder sees Anna’s laptop and throws it to the floor, breaking it. Intruder then sees Anna, tells her not to move, and grabs her notebook out of her hand before tearing all of the pages out of it. Intruder say to Anna that Intruder is just going to borrow the notebook, that she can trust Intruder with it, but ends up never returning it to her. Intruder then forces Anna to go to the garage next to the house. Police officers who saw Anna swaying and thought she was choking, break down the garage door, only to find out that Intruder had her hands tied up. The surprised officers arrest Intruder on the spot, dig into Intruder’s pockets, and find drugs and an illegal weapon. The whole time, Intruder kept saying, “It was a joke! It was a joke!” The officers, unsure of the situation, never tell Intruder that there is an arrest but, instead, run through the rest of the house and find the destroyed laptop under a couch and the gardening tools inside the kitchen, where Intruder had tried to hide them behind a door. Identify and discuss all applicable legal issues and come up with likely conclusions.
