Think about your socialization process: Identify key influences (family, friends, communities, culture, the broader society) and assess how, on multiple levels, they helped form your thinking about what it means to be a member of this group.
What privileges or disadvantages do you have as a member of each group, based on whether it is a subordinate or dominant group? How does it shape your daily life?
What institutions (religion, education, law, media) support your experience as a member of dominant groups, and conversely, how do they marginalize or exclude your experience as a member of a subordinate group?
Identify one or more specific events or critical incidents in your life that have contributed to your awareness of these social identities.
Identify one or more historical incidents and/or contexts that have influenced what it means to be a member of the social groups under consideration.
Conclusion: Reflect on any change in perspective you may have had over the semester and reflect whether or not any change has occurred. Further, analyze how an awareness of your own identities and socialization impact your role and practice as a social worker in diverse settings.
