What attempts did ex-slaves and blacks make to find the meaning of Freedom and what does this say about African American "agency"? How did Andrew Johnson and white Southerners attempt to thwart blacks in their efforts? Discuss and explain your answer. According to the selection by Eric Foner, why has the 14th Amendment had such a checkered history? What does the 14th Amendment supposedly guarantee? How did Southerners try to circumvent the "original intent" of the Amendment?
