The course textbook states about African American men and women that "the oppressed survive by knowing their oppressors" .Explain what this means and why it might have been significant for African American men and women in the nineteenth century. Then, more specifically, explain how this relates to experiences of Frederick Douglass. Additionally, discuss how this might have helped to create the "vibrant community and culture" that developed among slaves in the nineteenth century. Include in your discussion of community and culture how the use of folk tales, songs, and family life by African American men and women who were slaves shows their knowledge of their oppressors and how they used that knowledge to survive.
