All choices of topic must be approved by the instructor through the essay proposal and bibliography assignment.

The essay must propose and defend a clear thesis statement about the topic. Defence of the thesis must rest upon evidence gathered from at least four scholarly sources(not counting the course textbook). In terms of format, the finished essay should be 6-7 typed double-spaced pages in length, not counting title page and bibliography. It must feature a proper system of documentation employing either footnotes or endnotes and a separate bibliography.

These must be presented in accordance with the "notes and bibliography" style of documentation demon strated in the Chicago Manual of Style. (Please note : the "author-date" system of citation, which also appears in the Chicago Manual of Style, is not accepted. For information on how to distinguish between these two styles.
