The softness of comforters depends on the relative amounts of white feathers and down inside the conforter as well as the covering of the comforter. A bed and bath company would like to determine if the current composition of feathers and down is the softest. They took a random sample of the insides of the current composition of comforters and random samples of two other compositions and tested the softness of each.

a) Draw the correct experimental design of this study.

b) Describe a possible methodology to determine which comforters of the current composition are selected to be tested.

c) Is this study well designed? Please explain your answer. If the study is not well designed, how would you change the design method?

A researcher wanted to know if there was a difference in the effectiveness training results between permanent employees at a business and temporary employees at the same business. The two training methods were in-person training or via videos. After the training, each employee took a test to determine the effectiveness of the training. Draw the correct design for this experiment. (Hint: In the design, it is easier to start off with the training methodology.) Remember to clearly indicate what is randomized.

Agricultural researchers want to know if there is a difference in the amount of corn harvested when two different fertilizers are used. Consider the following observational study and experiment:

Observational study

The researcher chooses thirty corn plants which were fertilized with either fertilizer A or fertilizer B. After one season, she records the amount of corn harvested for each plant.

Experiment

Another researcher selects thirty corn plants and randomly assigns them to either fertilizer A or fertilizer B. After the end of the season, she records the amount of corn harvested for each plant.

Which of the two, the given observational study or the given experiment, will give better information about the relationship between the type of fertilizer and the amount of corn harvested? Please explain your answer.
