Research/Design Methodology Execution
• Research Projects: Demonstrated the ability to implement research methodology to collect valid and reliable data. The data is recorded accurately and stored securely. Evidence and artefacts (e.g. recordings, transcripts, notes, etc.) of the data collection process have been kept for verification purposes. The Data must be original. Includes rigorous data collection procedures. Methodology/plan to collect, analyse and interpret valid, reliable and relevant data, including describing the different choices made, why they were selected and are the most appropriate for the investigation.
• Design Projects: Functional requirements are clearly defined. The conceptual design demonstrates potential of technical innovation. Basic design configures a structure that supports the achievement of the proposed innovations. Describes the design choices made, why they were selected and are the most appropriate for the project and the proposed outcomes.
• Engineering in society projects:An engineering in society project shall describe the rationale of the research approach chosen to investigate the phenomenon of interest referencing the relevant literature. Clearly describe why the chosen theoretical framework, data collection, and analysis methods were the most appropriate for the project and the proposed outcomes.
Abstract or Executive Summary
Summarise each section of the report, including what research/design was conducted, what the results or findings were, and what recommendations were made. The summary is clearly articulated and aligned with the research objectives.
Introduction Introduces the topic and the context of the problem or situation in clearly articulated formal written format.
Describe detailed aims and objectives, and the scope or limitations of your investigation.
Include sub-headings e.g. Background, Context, Scope that follow logical and easily understandable communication. Comprehensively and effectively establish the context and relevance of the research where no revisions are necessary.
Method Research Report is written in the conventions of the field of practice. Explains how the research was conducted, using a step-by-step description. a) a scientific research project shall explain an experimental or simulation design clearly that addresses scientific rationality effectively. b) an engineering design project shall address a systematic approach to design to achieve functional requirements effectively, c) An engineering in society project shall describe the methods used for data collection, how participants and or data sources were recruited/chosen to represent the population/phenomenon of interest, and the steps taken to strongly ensure the validity of the data collection and analysis methods.
Most UTS assignments use APA 7 as the referencing style, but always check your assignment instructions and, if in doubt, check with your Capstone Supervisor.
Findings Critically analyse and Evaluate Findings showing the results of the research study, often in the form of tables, graphs or charts.
Findings are clearly, engagingly, and accurately represented without any evidence of confirmation bias, and any other bias is accounted for through reflexive analysis. If information is presented in tables or figures, they are integrated into the text, referred to, and accompanied by narrative explanation of the information according to APA 7th style. Discussion Discussion provides the reader with logical and reasonable interpretation of findings. Relationships between the findings and broader professional or academic issues are drawn referencing literature as required. An original contribution is made at the exceptional graduate engineer level
Explains what the results mean. This usually requires the researcher(s) to interpret the data and explain:
Why you think these results occurred
What you think the results mean
What implications these results might have for the situation being discussed.
The interpretation of the findings and recommendations are supported with clear arguments referencing relevant literature, anoriginal contribution has been made to the field as appropriate to a capstone (AQF8) or graduate project (AQF9)
Conclusion and recommendations Briefly summarise the purpose of the research, the results and the findings.
May include recommendations, or these may be included in a separate section before the conclusion. Insightful conclusions and recommendations can be found.
Organisation and project management (Pass/fail) Detailed communications procedure mutually suitable to both student and supervisor that clearly and logistically captures scope of work, deliverables, timelines, responsibilities and reference to meetings, use of feedback and personal reflections that discuss individual professional growth during the Capstone project progress.
Improving self and project management involves establishing clear goals, creating structured plans, implementing them, and documenting progress. Regular reflection and iteration are crucial for demonstrating personal and professional growth in these areas.
Seek and respond to feedback (Pass/Fail) The student has presented in a 3-5 minutes project video
3-5 mins Project Video submitted separately on Canvas. Video Content: 1. Brief introduction to your project 2. Your methodology (your approach, including why it was chosen and is appropriate for your project) 3. Main outcomes/findings/recommendations 4. What aspects of your capstone work, if any, do you feel are exceptional, unique, or outstanding? (Optional) 5. What you learned from your Capstone experience/project (at least two things) that will benefit your future employment.
