You tell your boss that a long-time employee nearing retirement, took a strong leadership role in the company’s new initiative. He brought the project in ahead ofschedule and under budget. You promised him a bonus. Your boss balks – he says basic economics says we should not pay it. His role in the project is complete and thus those benefits are sunk. Moreover, he’s about to retire and thus defaulting on the promise will have few consequences for his future behavior at the firm. What do you say?
