For example, consider a company that designs and manufactures tractor engines. Its business strategy is to create a competitive advantage by leveraging its design expertise. If it insources the repair of its engines, this operational management strategy aligns with the high-level business competitive strategy because its design engineers will have constant and easy access to returned engines that are in need of repair. This will allow the design engineers to collaborate with repair engineers in the design of repair procedures and it will allow the design engineers to improve their designs based on direct observation of failures observed in engines returned from the field.
