"Currently, I serve on the board of directors for a nonprofit organization in my hometown Dallas, TX, and have been for over 4 years. In my experience, I started as a young board member under 30 years of age and moved quickly into an officer role, as the board secretary. Lisa confirms my role as she advises that "the board's secretary must protect the organizations' documents such as the by-laws, the articles of the incorporation board, and committee insures and important documents" (Dicke, 2023). Looking back at my experience, I learned quickly that ensuring diversity in gender, race, age, professional background, and interest is critical but challenging. Before I joined, all members were over 40 years old and had been part of the organization since its start. In addition, many board members were often staff members and had a conflict of interest that was never addressed. Lack of diversity and conflicts of interest can limit perspectives and reduce the board's effectiveness. The way we were able to overcome this.
