Stature and place of visual representation

Question: It is perhaps difficult for us to imagine the stature and place of visual representation-particularly representation of Catholic subject-matter-in the Medieval period. Whether in the form of illustration, painting, or sculpture, it was the primary means for the single most powerful moral and social (even political) authority in Europe-the Catholic Church-to assert its teachings and guide its subjects. The question is, could art attain such importance today? Could art, defined as broadly as you like, assert a comparable authority in the modern world? Are there instances when you believe it does? What would such an art look like, and/or what would its purpose be?
