  • A basketball player will attempt 20 shots, X is the number of shots he/she makes.
  • A couple plans to have 4 children, X is the number of boys in the 4 children.
  • 40 US residents will be selected, X is the number of females in the 40 selected people.
  • A student will take an exam with 20 questions, X is the number of correct answers.

In each of these cases, (a) state the sample space of the random experiment, (b) find the number of all possible outcomes, (c) explain why X is a random variable and state its range, (d) formulate conditions under which X is (at least approximately) a Binomial random variable
