A chemical process is designed to produce ethylene from ethane according to the reaction: C2H6 (ethane) ? C2H4 (ethylene) + H2 The fresh feed to the process contains pure ethane at a flowrate of 100 mole/min. The fresh feed is mixed with a recycle stream from the separator and fed to a reactor. The single pass ethane conversion is 10.0 %. The outlet from the reactor is sent to a separator which sends a fraction of the ethylene and 100 % of the hydrogen to the top outlet process stream. The top outlet stream from the separator does not contain any ethane. The bottoms stream from the separation system is recycled back to the reactor. This recycle stream contains no hydrogen, and has a ratio of ethane to ethylene of 4 to 1. Part of the recycle stream is vented in a purge line. The remaining recycle stream is mixed with the fresh feed and sent back into the reactor. The recycle ratio (defined as total molar flow rate of recycle stream divided by the total molar flowrate of fresh gas) is 10. Draw a process flow diagram for this process (15 pts) Find the number of unknown variables and independent equations (10 pts) Find the overall ethane conversion (10 pts) Find the flowrates of all streams in this process. Redraw the flow sheet with the flowrates of all the species in the stream on it. (25 pts) For complete credit for this problem you will need to make sure that you show your work.
