How come when you add an electron to an anion, the ionic radius increases, but as you go right across a periodic table, atomic radius decreases? The book says atomic radius decreases because of effective nuclear charge and shielding ; It states that the more electrons are added, the core electrons cannot shield those electrons and that is why it gets attracted to the nucleus, but would that not be the same thing for ionic radius when anions are formed?
