Review the following case:

Mr. Richard Sidway, a wealthy businessman, was concerned about his 22 year-old granddaughter Jessica not focussing on her college studies. To motivate Jessica to party less and study more, Mr. Sidway promised Jessica $5,000 if she would refrain from smoking, drinking, swearing or gambling until she graduated. Jessica upheld her part of the bargain and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, having not smoked, drank or participated in any of the other promised activities. Upon graduation Jessica wrote her grandpa requesting the $5,000. Mr. Sidway wrote back saying there was never a valid contract and he rejected her demand for the money.
