Historians have long used the term "Cold War" to describe the sustained period of U.S.- Soviet tension and rivalry that began in the heart of Europe after World War II. Yet this clash turned "hot" in many Third World countries. Why did U.S. and Soviet policymakers believe that these countries were critical to national and global security, and how did they wage war there? Give at least two specific examples of intervention to make your argument.
