Sources of Evidence and Search Strategies

You should have a full understanding of what evidence-based management is and its importance to an organization. In addition, you have learned about the importance of having credible sources that support decision making. This discussion focuses on the analysis, reporting, and assessment of sources of information and search strategies. Respond to the following to better understand when to use certain sources of information and how to search for them:

  • Using the information found in the Shemilt text, starting on page 12, describe how and when various sources of information should be used. For example, what types of sources should you use when looking for cost? What types should you use when looking for decision-making strategies?
  • Identify search strategies that are used to gather evidence and explain how they work.

Use your texts to complete the following:

  • In the Shemilt text:
    • Read Chapter 1, "From Effectiveness to Efficiency? An Introduction to Evidence-Based Decisions and Economics," pages 1-7. In order to understand evidence-based management within in health care, you need to generally understand evidence-based policy and practice, which is the focus of this chapter.
    • Read Chapter 2, "The Role of Review and Synthesis Methods in Decision Models," pages 8-22. This chapter investigates decision models and strategies for searching for sources of information. You will use both of these skills to complete the course project.
