What are some key communication competencies needed in leaders today?

There are several communication competencies that are important for leaders in today's society. The first of which is a heightened sense of situational and contextual awareness. Leaders today need to be great listeners and also astute in their observations (Myatt, 2012). Leaders today also need to develop a way to speak to their teams in a way in which they speak to their emotions and aspirations. Great leaders also are skilled at reading their team's attitudes, concerns, and values.

Is individual communication more important than group or mass communication? Why or why not?

Individual communication is not more important than group or mass communication. Group communication is essential in a productive business environment. Group communication brings together and unifies the voices of team. This allows the leader to effectively understand and take into account what the group's feelings are on certain topics and to be able to make adjustments accordingly. Although individual communication is important and can be very productive, effective group communication will lead to the best overall team performance.

List 2–4 strategies that leaders can use to improve their individual communication skills. Which method is most important? Why?

There are several very useful strategies that leaders can implement in order to improve their individual communication skills including: having an open mind, listening, and replacing ego with empathy (Myatt, 2012). I believe replacing ego with empathy is the most important because empathetic communicators display authenticity and transparency.
