Considering the simple case of linear regression analysis (one dependent and one independent variable) please share a couple of limiting and empowering factors related to this important tool.

To get you started: I consider the first step in a thorough regression analysis to be to graph the data in a scatter plot. The scatter plot (even before a regression is plotted) can reveal important problems in the data that can save a researcher embarrassment in the end.
