Do you think engineering and technical companies should conduct interviews?

In class, we learned that interviews are one of the worst methods for job selection. This is because the way an individual performs in a verbal interview is not necessarily indicative of their actual physical and technical skillset. Despite this, most companies across the world still conduct at least one interview with potential candidates before hiring them. It is true that the interview is sometimes accompanied by a technical skills test, but there are very few corporations that have done away with interviews completely.

Indeed, a job search website, suggests that this is because interviews allow the hiring staff to grasp the soft skills of the candidates. Soft skills are personality-related skills that allow individuals to live and work in harmony with other humans. Someone who has great soft skills can be an asset to a company, as they are able to keep team morale up and communicate effectively with any sort of person. Engineering is arguably a team activity, as most engineers work in a group to accomplish tasks and solve problems. Verbal interviews may help companies to determine if an individual has the capacity to work well on these teams.
