Thank you for sharing which aspects of your personality are strengths and which are areas of growth for your journey as a counsellor. I appreciate your reflection and question as I think they are personality traits that can pose barriers in the professional demands of counselling. For instance, I too am an introvert and find that significant social interaction can be emotionally and physically depleting for me. I need to be aware of my emotional wellbeing by engaging in ongoing self-reflective practice to be successful in the counselling role. Davies et al. (2022) explored factors that mitigated burn out for new counsellors which included self-care and having a positive social support to assist in managing stress. I think awareness in one's own attributes and when they are feeling depleted to implement balance in self care practices. For instance, for me after a long day of social interaction I often feel mentally fatigued and use exercise, music, and walking my dog as strategies to re energize myself. What are strategies that you would use to assist yourself in polishing your social skills or hardening your skin in your pursuit to connect with clients more successfully?
