"An outpatient surgical center has a new nursing director. The director has recently implemented new processes for orientation, annual evaluation, and ongoing competency assessments. Nurses are now required to develop a professional portfolio which is stored at the center. The portfolio contains a resume, professional credentials and certifications, continuing education, samples of projects or presentations, and competency documentation. The annual evaluation now includes a process of self evaluation and peer evaluation in addition to the evaluation by the manager. These changes have created quite a stir at the surgical center. Many of the nurses have voiced concerns about the appropriateness of peer evaluation. Additionally, they have been slow to complete their professional portfolios. Conversations about the portfolios indicate that the nurses do not understand the value of a portfolio and think that it is just one more thing to have to do."
