Sam owns a two-family house in a poor section of the city. A fire breaks out, destroying the house and causing $150,000 in damages to an adjacent store. The state charges Sam with arson. Simultaneously, VIckie, the store owner (of the adjacent property) sues Sam for the damage to her property. Both cases are tried before juries, and the two juries hear identical evidence of Sam's actions. But the criminal jury acquits Sam, while the civil jury awards Vickie $150,000. How did this happen?
