Scenario:

Imagine that two focus groups have been conducted in an Asian American and immigrant community in a large urban city. The rationale for conducting the qualitative study was previous research finding that Asian Americans and immigrants are reluctant to seek mental health services. To further understand this issue, service providers including social workers, counselors, doctors, and nurses were recruited to discuss the barriers in implementing mental health services targeted to Asian Americans and immigrants. After the focus groups were transcribed, two research assistants completed a content analysis of the transcripts.

In this Assignment, you assume the role of the social worker reviewing the content analysis. You have been tasked with working with an advisory board in the community to formulate social work practice recommendations. You must also consider how culture may influence interpretation of qualitative data.

Play the part of the social worker reviewing the content analysis. It is your responsibility to develop suggestions for social work practice in collaboration with a local advisory board. The impact of culture on how qualitative data are interpreted must also be considered.

Question:

Compose a three page paper outlining the key themes discovered in the focus groups' content analysis. Give a thorough analysis of the present barriers to services (identified in each theme) based on the data.
Develop and include two social work suggestions to address two service barriers. Use academic research to back up the suggestions.
A culturally appropriate intervention is necessary, therefore explain how to work with other service providers and important community members to make sure they understand.
Explain how cultural values and beliefs may have affected how you viewed the focus group findings by critically reflecting on your own culture. What particular steps would it take to improve cultural competence to work with this group in practice or research?
