For your first assignment as a gang-intervention specialist, you meet 14-year-old Diamond, an 8th grade girl in one of the most distressed schools in a Detroit suburb. Diamond joined a gang to survive after her stepfather and mother kicked her out of the house at the age of 13.
As you get to know Diamond, she reveals the following:
"...my dad owned strip clubs and rock & roll clubs for as long as I can remember. My mother was a heroin addict but she never had to do anything because they always had money. After they divorced, it was clear that my stepfather didn't like me so they rented a hotel room in Detroit, paid for it for two weeks, gave me $100 to eat, and told me I am not allowed to come home... that's when everything changed."
Based on this initial interview, you quickly learn that you have an ability to gain, build, and maintain the trust and confidence of Diamond given you too were in a gang in your youth.
For this assignment you will assume the role of a gang intervention specialist within your community. You will create an intervention model specific to working with Diamond and convey it in an infographic. Additionally, you will write a one page justification for what was included in your model and infographic.
Your intervention model should use some of the strategies learned which will help foster a safe and trusting environment. You should allow for open communication that facilitates Diamond's transition away from a life of participating in violent and destructive behavior. Ultimately she should be encouraged to lead a productive and healthy lifestyle.
