Question

Another reason why Europe experienced a period of rapid advancement and other countries, e.g., China, did not is a mixture of cultural, political, and institutional circumstances (Swanson 2016). China's culture of assimilation combined with memorization of, and adherence to, classical literature - as opposed to innovation - incentivized stability rather than progress. It seems China emphasized one's ability to be right based on historical knowledge whereas European intellectuals were allowed to challenge conventional wisdom and even confront religious dogma. In Europe there was both freedom and competition. Maybe not perfect freedom as we know from Galileo Galilei's run in with the Inquisition, but there was enough to ensure America's and Europe's 1st place position in the industrial revolution. This sociocultural look at the industrial revolution supports the validity of technological constructivism.
