The solvent system used forTLC in this lab is a 3:1:1 mixture of n-butanol/acetic acid/water.The pKa of acetic acid is 4.75. Review of McMurry Section 2.9 shows that anequilibrium between two acids will result in the equilibrium favoring formation of the weaker acid (lower pKa value). Predict which functional groups in the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine are expected to be protonated in the presence ofacetic acid. Draw the structures expected for these amino acids showing correct location of any charges.
