Observe the teacher and students working together. If possible, review a student's individualized Education Plan with identifying information removed. If you cannot review the document, discuss instructional goals and objectives with the cooperating teacher. Discuss any questions you have with the co-op teacher. Use the information you have gathered to answer the questions below:
1. State the chronological age range of the students in the class you visited and the type of special education support they receive. Provide a context for learning by describing the classroom environment. Describe the learners using status-enhancing, people-first language.
2. After reviewing the student's IEP and/or discussing it with the co-op teacher, identify:
- what skills he/she will work on in this classroom this year.
- why these skills were chosen.
- What tie-ins do you see between the skills students are working on and PA General Education Standards?
3. Describe at least two specific ways that the teacher differentiates instruction and/or assessment for their students. Describe any assistive technology used by the students. Does the teacher use UDL principles in their classroom?
4. Identify similarities and differences between students who receive special education support and those who do not receive support. To what extent do students who receive special education support interact with students in typical classrooms? Be specific.
5. Summarize your experience, reflecting on its impact or ways in which it changed or reinforced your perceptions about individuals with disabilities.
