Question
Alley, the chief scientist called and said she wanted me to explain how we grow employees. Dr. Thompson wants us to map the process out for her and present it. She said we should have a real handle on this if we intend to make long-term, powerful contributions to the organization. She kind of made me feel like I don't know what I am doing."
"I can relate. When I was new, an important person demanding answers could throw me for a loop, too. Dr. Thompson is really frustrated. Her division is struggling to keep scientists of all kinds. The truth is, CapraTek's competitors try to hire our best and brightest away from us," Alley said.
"What are we doing about it?" Robert demanded.
"Every company works to get a leg up on the competition. We do it too. Clever, industrious, rock star scientists do not grow on trees, you know."
"So, how do we grow scientists?" asked Robert.
"Robert, all we have to do is to explain the employee life cycle to Dr. Thompson. She is challenging us to think in strategic terms and help her keep the staff she needs."
"So next, I suppose, we'll need to figure out what's important to the scientists, right Alley?"
How Robert should answer Dr. Thompson's request for retention strategies for the scientists in her department?
