Social workers interact with clients regularly, but observing patterns in human behavior is not the same as conducting a research study using a systematic process. Social workers rely on peer-reviewed evidence from other practitioners to inform approaches to serving clients and their needs. When looking at research studies of evidence-based practice, social workers need to be able to identify potential biases that could invalidate the relevance of findings that serve their needs. If a bias results in skewed data or an inaccurate representation of findings, social workers who rely on such biased information could make costly decisions that lead to negative effects for clients, programs, and agencies. Identifying research bias can help social workers prevent these risks and make decisions informed by valid social work practice and evidence.
