In March 2010, a federal health-care law required chain restaurants with 20 or more locations to post caloric information on their menus. The stated goal was to make it easier for consumers to select healthier options, but a later Wall Street Journal (August 31, 2010) showed mixed results on whether this requirement had prompted consumers to choose healthier options. A data set, included in the exam answer file, gives transaction data for 40 Starbucks cardholders around the time of the ordinance. For each of those 40 customers, the average food and drink calories were recorded both prior to the ordinance and then after the ordinance. Test at the 5% significance level whether the average drink calories declined significantly after the ordinance. Also test at the 5% level whether the average food calories declined significantly after the ordinance. For each test, please state your null and alternative hypotheses, and include your critical value, test statistic, conclusion in the context of the problem, and your p-value.
