You are a department manager of a mid-size hotel in a remote coastal community. You have a number of employees that report to you, made up of two (2) supervisors, eight (8) permanent staff and fifteen (15) casual staff. There appears to be a high turnover of casual staff, but you put this down to the nomadic style of casual employment within the industry. The group is very mixed. Age ranges from 17 to 58. There are 16 women and 9 men. Five staff are from non-English speaking backgrounds. When the staff were originally employed, they were placed in specific areas (e.g. housekeeping, reception, food and beverage) however, they are now required to work all areas of the organisation. Lately you have noticed an increase in absenteeism, diversity issues, communication problems and a declining attitude in the staff towards instructions from you and your supervisors. It has become obvious to you that something needs to be done.
