Assignment:
Answer the following questions as you read Felson and Staff's (2010) study, "The Effects of Alcohol Intoxication on Violent versus Other Offending."
1. In their introduction and discussion sections, the authors discuss many ways in which conclusions about the relationship between alcohol consumption and criminal offending might be spurious. Identify one of these potential sources of spuriousness/omitted variable bias, and explain the authors' argument as to how this factor might lead to spurious conclusions.
2. The authors analyze data from a sample of inmates. The authors explain that, on the negative side, the nature of their sample prevents them from drawing conclusions about the effect of alcohol on offending versus not offending. On the positive side, the nature of their sample minimizes omitted variable bias from the propensity to commit crime. Explain the authors' arguments about these points. In other words, how does the fact that their sample contains only inmates shape the conclusions that they can and cannot draw from their analyses?
3. Identify the type of regression analysis used by the authors, and *BRIEFLY* explain why they chose this type of regression as opposed to a different type. (Your explanation need only be a single sentence.)
