The movement of garages from a separate part of the property to an integrated room within the house itself signifies two trends in the history of the automobile.

First, it mirrors the movement of the automobile from a "toy for recreation" to a necessary part of the workday, and of everyday life.

The garage moves closer to the heart of the home as the car moves closer to the heart of everyday life. Second, this move was only made possible because the car became available to the middle class.

The masses could afford to purchase automobiles, and they needed them to get to work and school.

But they couldn't afford a huge property, or to build a large secondary building for the sole purpose of housing an automobile.

Thus the garage transitioning from a separate building into the home-proper reflects changes in both the necessity of the car, and the availability of the car.loan
