Recognise healthy body systems
Understanding healthy body systems can also be supported through the study of Anatomy Biology and Physiology.
Section 1: Mr Schmidt
Mr Schmidt is 68 years old. He was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes during a routine health checkup. He needs to manage his diabetes with medication, regular monitoring of blood glucose levels and a healthy diet.
He was also diagnosed with hypertension, which requires additional management strategies such as medication, lifestyle modifications and regular blood pressure monitoring.

Answer the following questions.
Identify three body systems that are impacted by Type 2 diabetes.
For each body system, briefly explain how Type 2 diabetes can impact it.
Identify three body systems that are impacted by hypertension.
For each body system, briefly explain how hypertension can impact it.
Outline three things that Mr Schmidt can do to maintain healthy body functioning in regards to his Type 2 diabetes.
Outline three things that Mr Schmidt can do to maintain healthy body functioning in regards to his hypertension.
Assume Mr Schmidt decides to improve his health through physical activity. Physical activity will of course impact his cardiovascular system, respiratory system and his musculoskeletal system.
Explain how the relationship between these three systems will help support the healthy functioning of his body.

Section 2: Ms Nguyen
Ms Nguyen is 75. She has been diagnosed with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
Ms Nguyen also has urinary incontinence. She experiences occasional leakage of urine and the urge to urinate frequently. She suffers from urinary tract infections at least three times a year - one infection required her to be hospitalised and needed to be given antibiotics intravenously.
Ms Nguyen has always been outgoing and is known among support workers to be one of the friendliest clients of the service. She used to walk regularly with her friends, but she has recently stopped going for walks and stays home more often than not.

Answer the following questions.
Identify the main body system that is impacted by GORD and how GORD affects it.
Ms Nguyen is 75 years old. Describe three ways that GORD can impact people who are ageing.
Identify the main body system that is impacted by UTIs and its impacts.
Describe three ways that UTIs can impact people who are ageing.
Outline three things you might suggest Ms Nguyen can do to reduce the impacts of GORD.
Consider the area in which you are studying and make sure that your answers are within the scope of responsibility of the type of job role you would expect to have.
Outline three things that you might suggest Ms Nguyen can do to reduce the risk of UTIs, so that she can begin walking again and feel more confident while out and about.

Section 3: Sonya Finley
Sonya is a software engineer who works at home. She was born with cerebral palsy. She is highly independent and leads an active lifestyle with the support of assistive devices and assistance from her care team. Sonya loves tech and is always looking for new ways that technology can assist her to live her life actively and independently.

You are to assume that Sonya has spastic cerebral palsy, with hemiplegia.
Answer the following questions.
List and describe three ways in which cerebral palsy affects the normal functioning of the body.
Identify three body systems that can be impacted by cerebral palsy.
For each body system, briefly explain the ways it is impacted.
Describe three strategies Sonya can use to maintain her health and wellbeing.
Explain how each strategy can help her.

Knowledge of Biology can help students better understand body systems and their functions when completing this portfolio.
Section 4: Role plays
Your assessor will observe you while you:
use information about healthy body systems to recognise changes in the person's health status and physical condition
use and share information about healthy functioning of the body when carrying out work tasks
review/share information with the client about factors that contribute to maintenance of a healthy body
follow procedures to report changes to your supervisor.
