After reading Rosemarie Zagarri's "The Rights of Women," answer the following questions:

a) Zagarri demonstrates that long before the American Revolution, European intellectuals had been advocating for women's social equality. What, then, was different about calls for women's equality during the American Revolution?

b) Zagarri highlights that one state in particular -- New Jersey -- explicitly gave women the right to vote in 1790; but 17 years later, the state explicitly barred women (and free Blacks) from voting. She argues that what was significant was not that women lost the right to vote, but that the "experiment in female suffrage had been tried." (386). Do you agree with that position, or not? Explain your answer.
