Assignment:

Huntington's disease is an example of a lethal dominant gene. It can stay in the population because it does not cause death until later in life -- after reproduction. If you have the gene, you will have the disease -- there is no escaping it. If one of your parents has Huntington's, you have a 50/50 chance of having the disease. There is a genetic test that will tell you whether or not you have inherited the gene!

You are 26 years old. Your whole future is ahead. Your father has Huntington's disease and you are watching the progression of his illness.

  1. Do you want to be tested? Why or Why not? Genetic Testing for Huntington's Disease
  2. Will you have children? Does your answer here depend on your answer to the first question?
  3. What are the implications of your answer to the first question? (Hint: How would it affect your marriage? Your job? Insurance?)
